1.Place mushrooms in a heatproof bowl with boiling water. Stand for 15 minutes. Drain, but keep liquid. Halve mushrooms and remove stalks.
2.Heat oil in a large, heavy-based saucepan on medium. Saute onions, garlic, turmeric and cinnamon sticks for 2-3 minutes.
3.Add steak and mushrooms. Cook, stirring, for 2-3 minutes, until beef has browned. Stir in coconut cream, 1/2 cup mushroom liquid, fish sauce and sugar.
4.Bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 50-60 minutes, until sauce is thick and meat is tender. If sauce becomes too thick, stir in remaining mushroom liquid. Top with peanuts and serve.
This dish would also be delicious with chicken or pork. Instead of peanuts, garnish with fresh herbs like coriander, if you prefer.
