Method

1.Preheat oven to very hot, 220°C. Lightly grease a 20cm round cake pan. Line base with baking paper.
2.In a small bowl, combine dates, pecans and sugar.
3.Sift flour into a large bowl; rub in butter lightly, using fingertips.
4.Make a well in centre of flour; pour in milk all at once. Using a bread and butter knife, mix quickly to a soft, sticky dough. Do not over-mix.
5.Turn onto a lightly floured surface; knead gently. Press or roll out to form a rectangle about 2cm thick.
6.Sprinkle dough with date mixture, pressing slightly and leaving a 4cm border at one long side. Roll up tightly from other long side; cut log into 8 slices.
7.Place slices, cut side up, close together, in pan. Bake 15-18 minutes, until scones sound hollow when tapped. Transfer to a wire rack; brush with honey.

To warm honey, measure it into a small, microwave-safe bowl using an oiled spoon. Heat in microwave on high (100%) power 10 seconds.
