Method
.Preheat oven to 170°C/340°F. Grease 20cm x 30cm (8-inch x 12-inch) rectangular cake pan and deep 15cm (6-inch) round cake pan; line bases and sides with baking paper, extending paper 5cm above sides.
.Make cakes according to directions on packets. Pour two-thirds of the mixture into rectangular pan; pour remaining mixture into round pan. Bake rectangular cake about 45 minutes; bake round cake about 50 minutes. Stand cakes in pans 10 minutes before turning, top-side up, onto wire rack to cool.
.Level cake tops; turn cakes cut-side down. Using picture as a guide, cut out gnome’s body from rectangular cake. Split round cake in half through centre. Use one half for gnome’s head and cut the other half into a triangle for the hat.
.To make butter cream, beat butter until white as possible, gradually beat in half the sifted icing sugar then milk, then remaining icing sugar. Beat until smooth.
.Using a sharp knife, cut a curved shape into base of triangle so that it fits onto gnome’s head. Position cake pieces, cut-side down, on 30cm x 40cm (12-inch x 16-inch) rectangular cake board to form gnome; secure with a little butter cream.
.Reserve half the butter cream. Tint half the remaining butter cream dark green using both the green and blue colourings; tint remaining half black.
.Spread half of the plain butter cream all over cake; refrigerate for 30 minutes to allow butter cream to set.
.Spread remaining plain butter cream over gnome’s arms and face. Spread black butter cream over boots and green butter cream over gnome’s jacket and hat.
.Using picture as a guide, position Smarties for eyes, gumball for nose, sour string for lips and white marshmallows for beard and eyebrows.
.Spread butter cream over dried pears; position on cake board, on either side of gnome’s head, for ears, secure with a little butter cream. Trim and position licorice strap for belt, and Lattice biscuit for belt buckle.
.Position mint choc balls around bottom edge of hat for trim. Position orange flying saucers at end of arms for hands and pink flying saucers on face for cheeks.
