Method

1.Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan forced. Grease and line base and side of a 20cm (base diameter) round cake pan with baking paper.
2.Using an electric mixer, beat butter and sugar in a bowl until light and creamy. Add eggs, one by one, beating lightly after each addition. Stir in sifted flours and sifted cocoa powder, then buttermilk, until just combined. Pour mixture into prepared pan; level surface. Bake for 1 hour 5 minutes or until a skewer inserted at centre comes out clean. Cool cake in pan.
3.Using a large serrated knife, horizontally cut cake into 3 equal layers. Sandwich layers with marmalade. Transfer cake to a serving plate.
4.Sift icing sugar and extra cocoa powder into a bowl. Add milk and extra butter; using an electric mixer, beat until thick and creamy. Spread icing over top and side of cake. Serve.
