Method

.Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F. Grease 6-hole (¾-cup/180ml) texas muffin pan.
.Make cake according to directions on packet. Drop ⅓ cup of mixture into each hole; bake about 25 minutes. Stand cakes in pan 5 minutes before turning, top-side up, onto wire rack to cool.
.Level cake tops so they are the same height. Using 6cm (2½-inch) round cutter, make an imprint in the top of each cake; scoop out cake to make a 1.5cm deep hollow in each cake.
.To make butter cream, beat butter until white as possible, gradually beat in half the sifted icing sugar then milk, then remaining icing sugar. Beat until smooth.
.Tint butter cream black; spread all over side and top edge of each cake. Secure cakes on 30cm x 40cm (12-inch x 16-inch) rectangular cake board with a little butter cream.
.To make glacé icing; sift icing sugar into small heatproof bowl; stir in butter and enough of the hot water to make a thick paste. Stir over small saucepan of simmering water until icing is spreadable.
.Divide glacé icing into five small bowls. Tint icing red, yellow, green, orange and blue.
.Fill the hollow in each cake with one of the coloured icings. Position paint brushes as you like.

Parties for budding artists are popular and this cake will get them in the creative mood. It doesn’t matter if these pots tip over, nothing’s going to spill. Tint the icing any colours you like, just make them bright. Lollies could easily be hidden under the glacé icing. You’ll have enough cake mixture left over to make another three paint pots if you like.
