Wines that will put a spring in your step

We do the hard yards by tasting a large number of wines blind to discover the good, the bad and the ugly.
Wine recommendations

Villa Maria 2015 Cellar Selection Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, $15.99

One of the first examples of 2015 Marlborough sauvignon blanc I have tasted. If it’s typical of the vintage then it appears an excellent one. Citrus/grapefruit, melon and a hint of passionfruit supported by juicy acidity.

Waimea 2014 Pinot Gris, Nelson, $20

Very appealing pinot gris that’s like biting into a fresh peach. Other flavours include pear and a suggestion of spice/clove. Soft-textured with a hint of sweetness but very well balanced with a pleasantly drying finish.

Esk Valley 2013 Chenin Blanc, Hawke’s Bay, $20

Quite a complex chenin blanc with peach, stewed apple, honey and a suggestion of roasted nut from partial barrel fermentation. The wine is dry, medium-bodied with a lingering finish. I expect this wine will still be drinking well in 7-8 years.

Yalumba 2013 The Y Series Shiraz Viognier, Australia, $17.50

This solid red delivers a great deal for its relatively modest price. It’s a rich, mouthfilling wine with strong plum and chocolate/mocha characters together with just a hint of a floral influence from the (tiny) viognier component.

Church Road 2013 McDonald Series 2013 Syrah, Hawke’s Bay, $29.99

Dense, inky Syrah with plum, dark berry, chocolate, vanilla, black pepper and a suggestion of violet flavours. Soft, ripe tannins provide structure without limiting accessibility – it’s easy to appreciate now. Lengthy wine with power, complexity and potential.
