What are air fryers, and how do they work?

Despite their name, air fryers don’t fry your food. Using a convection mechanism, air fryers cook food by circulating hot air to temperatures up to 200°C. Similar to fan-forced ovens, they cook food faster, and are lighter, compact and portable.

Because no traditional frying is involved, less oil is required. Good air fryers also extract fat, meaning healthier, tastier meals.

Are air fryers worth buying?

The best air fryers cook quick, healthy dinners – their heat-up time is faster than an oven, they’re easy to use, and little prep is required.

The best thing about air fryers? Because they use far less oil than deep fryers, food is crispier and is cooked evenly from all angles.

Lastly, depending on your air fryer model, you’ll use less energy than a wall oven, saving you money on your power bill.

For example, when tested by Newell Brands in Australia in 2023, the Sunbeam All-In-One Air Fryer Oven was found to be 50% more energy efficient than a built-in 70L electric fan oven. The comparison was based on the energy required to cook 300g of frozen oven fries, demonstrating the air fryer oven’s ability to save energy while delivering similar cooking results.

According to Appliances Online, cooking a small or medium-sized meal in an air fryer is generally cheaper than using a regular full-sized oven. This is because air fryers heat a smaller area and cook food faster, making them more energy-efficient for smaller portions.

Where to buy the best air fryer in New Zealand?

Ninja offers a great range of air fryers online that use advanced technology, including double-stack, dual-drawer, and portable air fryer options. Other brands to look out for include Breville, Braun, Greenpan, Our Place and Sunbeam. Retailers like Spotlight, Noel Leeming, Briscoes and Harvey Norman also stock air fryers.

What can I cook in an air fryer?

Air fryers are perfect for heating leftovers, especially french fries or pizzas that typically get soggy if reheated in a microwave.

In fact, an air fryer can cook nearly anything, from tofu and chickpeas to ravioli and broccoli. Some models have extra features, such as dehydrating, grilling and baking bread. If you’re looking for the best air fryer recipes in NZ, New Zealand Woman’s Weekly Food has a fantastic selection. Our favourites include air fryer chicken nuggetsair fryer pork chops with Brussels sprouts, air fryer roasted salmon and fennel salad, and a 5-ingredient celebration cake.
