8 tips for nailing your Instagram baking snap
Get the angles right by making sure the most visually appealing part of the dish is prominent. For example, overhead for tarts to show off the filling; and close, straight-on shots for beautiful decorative toppings on cupcakes and cakes.
Add texture and depth with different linen like tea towels, napkins or aprons. Some twinkly items can’t hurt either – cutlery and glasses will bring the shot to life.
Create context by including props that were part of the recipe creation, such as baking ingredients as well as utensils and chopping boards.
Think about tones, don’t stray too far from one tone and tie in colours of the food with props for a cohesive image.
Don’t over prop – remember the food is the hero. Don’t distract from the food. Less is more.
Natural light is always best, position by a window or a door so the light is falling on your arrangement from the side.
The straightening tool is your friend – images are always visually more appealing when the horizon line is straight. Straighten up the table or bench in the background and you’ll have a much better image.
To filter or not to filter? If you’ve followed the other tips (in particular the lighting) then you shouldn’t need to do much to the image at all. A few tweaks to the contrast, temperature and saturation will often do a better job to enhance your image than filters will.
