Following in the footsteps of burgers, hot dogs are the latest fast food staple to be given fine dining makeover.
Fancy hot dogs (or haute dogs) take the classic bun, hot dog and condiment formula to new heights – nothing is off limits.
Fillings can be anything from traditional (such as sauerkraut, gourmet mustard, ketchup, bacon and crispy onion) to downright outrageous (think Mexican-style dogs with guacamole, japalenos and nachos or even filled with gravy, fries or mac ‘n’ cheese).
Eateries like DogHaus in the US and Wurstdogs in Belgium have succeeded in taking fancy hot dogs to the masses, with DogHaus signing a $500 million deal to open 300 locations across America.
The trend has even made its way to New Zealand, with Auckland-based restaurants like Brooklyn Dogs, Fokker Bros and food stall Mr Dog Frites all offering their own versions.
Feeling hungry yet?
Creating a haute dog at home is easier than you think. Dig in first thing in the morning with a breakfast hot dog, add a spicy spin with a chilli cheese dog or keep things classy with this sauerkraut and gruyère creation.
