Heal your gut: How I fixed my stomach through food

Lee Holmes first delved into nutritional healing after being diagnosed with a chronic autoimmune disease. Today, she shares the knowledge she gained through her recovery with the rest of the world through her popular blog and new book.

Gut problems are at the forefront of our health concerns: bloating, bowel issues and food intolerances are becoming more common, and Lee says many of these problems can be improved or resolved naturally.

Lee’s new book, Heal Your Gut, is the perfect place to start. It features a four-week treatment protocol, including 100 healing recipes, meal planners, a shopping list as well as information on gut-healing herbs, natural antibiotics and yoga stretches.

It goes hand in hand with her online four week program, and which she says together can have you on your way to a healthy and happy gut.

After hearing that thousands of people had fantastic results with the program, I decided to give it a go myself and attempt to undo some of the damage from several months of 3pm vending machine runs, and a few too many burgers.

The first couple of days were the hardest. I suffered ‘detox’ symptoms such as headaches and dizziness as the toxins left my body. I also struggled with mental satiety, particularly with the concept of eating soup without bread (what?!) and not finishing every meal with something sweet.

But these symptoms only lasted a few days and I then began noticed noticing the benefits. I felt lighter, my stomach was flatter, and I didn’t feel bloated after every meal.

I looked forward to mealtime, and to my surprise found the meals both satisfying and delicious. The meals were easy to prepare, and could easily be portioned and frozen for the week. All Lee’s recipes are also free of gluten and refined sugar.

While the program is not marketed around weight loss, this was one change I definitely noticed. Removing sugar and carbs did wonders for my waist line, and I noticed my pants were fitting a little less snug. “Some participants have lost up to 18 kilograms on the program”, says Lee.

The program is also used to treat a variety of health conditions stemming from the gut. Sharon Rosenrauch turned to the program after years of suffering from several gastrointestinal issues including Coeliac disease and food intolerances. “I can honestly say my stomach hasn’t felt this good in a long time”, says Sharon. “My stomach lining feels less inflamed, I can practise my yoga without my stomach making embarrassing sounds, and I have much more energy!”

Heal Your Gut also provides detailed information on adding certain foods back into your diet. One thing I noticed when finishing the program was that I wasn’t able to overindulge as easily as before, I didn’t crave fatty or sweet foods as much and I felt lighter and more energetic.

It’s amazing how easily you can fall off track with your diet, but it’s just as interesting to see how quickly you can reboot your system and start fresh. The Heal Your Gut program is the best way to do that. showed me that with just four weeks of dedication, you can reset your entire body.
