Real kitchens: Otis and Sarah Frizzell

Located at their Western Springs, Auckland home, Otis and Sarah Frizzell designed the kitchen themselves, fitting it out to prep food for The Lucky Taco Truck and test recipes, but also to create big meals for the dinner parties they love hosting at home.

“I just like being in here, it’s my happy place,” says Sarah. “It’s designed 100 per cent for us, by us, filled with things we love from the colour and layout to the gadgets, utensils and music playing.” The personality-packed space is also practical for the couples’ busy lifestyle. “Because it’s an extension of our house, I can get up at 6am, put pork in the oven then do businessey stuff, all while wearing my jarmies,” says Sarah.

Food made in the kitchen is prepped in the couple’s signature Mexican style: slow roasted free-farmed pulled pork; braised beef tongues; marinated steak, fish, and prawns; blitzed lamb’s brains; stewed veges, plus salsas, pickles and aguas frescas; chopped limes, red cabbage and bucket loads of fresh coriander. “We’re also mad about soups at the minute,” says Sarah. “Winter does that – makes you crave nourishing soul food packed with goodness. We’ve been experimenting with different lentils, pulses and beans to make ham hock soup using our beef tongue stock. Uh-mazing.”

The couple’s favourite kitchen tools are The Food Shovel (their name for a cheap wok scoop bought at New Gum Sarn off K Road); and The Monkey (a red heat-proof puppet oven mitt). “It’s totally ridiculous but works a treat – what’s a kitchen without a few silly gadgets?” laughs Sarah.
