Having been married to a Frenchman for over 15 years, some of his food traits and gourmet passions have rubbed off on me over time. One of those passions is bread. It’s a French daily ritual and one not to be messed with. So when we were asked to work with and create recipes to accompany a new Flatbread to possibly replace our beloved bread, I was instantly sceptical.

Well my friends, you can see from these photos that we were very, very pleasantly surprised and are now totally hooked on these flavoursome, versatile, crisp and light Flatbreads. (And very quietly, my Frenchman is too.) They are now a permanent fixture in my pantry and the perfect thing to grab when planning parties, when unexpected guests arrive and in the terrible event of running out of my Frenchman’s bread!

Camembert and or washed rind brie and fresh fruits

Pair up a ripe washed rind French cheese such as Chaumes Le Classique and a very creamy L’Aviateur or a soft New Zealand camembert with a fresh selection of summer berries such as blueberries, raspberries and boysenberries atop Huntley & Palmers Sesame Seed Flatbread. Enjoy with sparkling rosé or a glass of chilled champagne.

Caprese salad topping – This is the most classic and well known of Italian salads and it’s wonderful on Huntley & Palmers Flatbreads. Lay out thick slices of ripe tomatoes on a platter. Top with torn pieces of fresh mozzarella and then scatter over some fresh basil leaves. Season generously with salt and pepper and drizzle over the best olive oil you can get your hands on. (A sprinkle of balsamic glaze is great for a bit of extra zing here too.) Serve with a few forks so guests can help themselves.

Cheddar with cornichons – There’s nothing quite like a good Kiwi tea break with cheese and crackers. Flatbreads make it all a bit fancy – add a block of sharp, aged cheddar for a bite of flavour, and plenty of gherkins or cornichons and of course a hot pot of gumboot tea.

Figs, blue cheese, walnut and honey topping with fruit pastes – The show stopper here is a great blue cheese – we like Stilton or our absolute favourite the Bleu d’Auvergne from France. Lay fruit pastes like pear or quince on your platter with a few crisp grapes and fresh pears. Add a jar of liquid honey and a scattering of walnuts. Encourage your guests to top a Huntley & Palmers Cracked Pepper & Rock Salt Flatbread with a crumble of cheese, a walnut or two and a drizzle of honey. Sublime!
