Method
1.Cut a thin slice from the bottom of each pear, to create a level base.
2.In a medium saucepan, combine all remaining ingredients. Bring to a simmer on medium heat. Add pears, ensuring they are covered, and reduce heat to low. Simmer gently for 20-25 minutes, until tender.
3.Remove pears from liquid and set aside. Return saucepan to a high heat. Bring to a boil.
4.Boil for 10-15 minutes, until reduced by half and syrupy. Spoon syrup over pears and serve.
Add a strip of orange peel to the poaching liquid, if liked.
