Vanilla custard

1.Place cream and milk in a medium heavy-based saucepan. Using a wooden spoon, stir over moderately low heat until mixture comes to a simmer (don’t boil). Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla.
2.Meanwhile, whisk egg yolks, sugar and cornflour together in a large heatproof bowl until pale and creamy.
3.Gradually whisk hot milk mixture into egg mixture. Pour into a clean pan. Cook and stir over moderately low heat for 12-15 minutes or until mixture coats back of spoon. Drizzle over cake to serve.

You can make custard a day ahead.
