Spice things up!

Turn up the heat on your metabolism and make it work harder with a dash of chilli. “Adding 10g chilli (1 ½ tbsp.) to a meal can help you burn up to 60kJ,” says dietitian Zoe Wilson.

Munch on oats

Studies show eating breakfast can raise your resting metabolism by 10 per cent. Start your day with a bowl of oats – this superfood is packed with fibre, which will keep you feeling fuller for longer.

Serve up salmon

It’s a powerhouse of protein, which is essential for burning fat. “Protein is harder to digest than fat or carbs, so your body burns more energy breaking it down,” says Zoe. It’s also rich in omega-3 fats, which help heart and brain health.

Drink up

A study shows that people who drink eight glasses of water a day burn more kilojoules than those who have four. Aim to drink a glass an hour with ice – cold water is said to boost metabolism.

Avocado

Avocados are rich in healthy monounsaturated fats, which is not only incredibly satiating and will prevent you from overeating, but it helps to prevent the body from absorbing excess unhealthy fats. Add some avo to your breakfast for a healthy energy boost!

Cinnamon

Wonderfully fragrant and flavoursome, this versatile spice is one of the best ways to boost your metabolism. Sprinkle a teaspoon over your porridge in the morning, or add a whole stick to your next curry.
