Mixed berry and apple crumble

Filled with warming spices like cinnamon and star anise, this mixed berry and apple crumble is perfect for those chilly winter evenings

Crumble topping
  • 1/2 cup plain flour
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 60 gram butter, diced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup hazelnuts, chopped
Mixed berry and apple crumble
  • 410 gram can pie apples, drained
  • 400 gram can berry combo, drained, reserving syrup
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground mixed spice
  • 1/2 cup caster sugar
  • 2 star anise (optional)
  • icing sugar, for dusting
  • thick cream, to serve


Mixed berry and apple crumble

    Preheat oven to 180°C. Lightly grease 4 x 1-cup ovenproof dishes.

    In a large bowl, combine apple, berries, cinnamon and mixed spice. Set aside.

    Make crumble topping.

    In a medium saucepan, combine reserved berry syrup with sugar and star anise. Bring to the boil and simmer 4-5 minutes until thickened slightly. Remove star anise. Mix gently into apple mixture. Spoon into prepared dishes.

    Bake 5-10 minutes until heated through. Sprinkle with crumble. Dust with icing sugar. Top with thick cream.
Crumble topping

    Place flour, sugar, butter and cinnamon in a food processor. Process until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Add hazelnuts and pulse until finely chopped. Sprinkle mixture on a baking tray. Bake 10-15 minutes until golden, breaking it up with a fork twice during cooking.


Use any canned fruit or berries you like for this recipe. The crumble mixture can also be combined and sprinkled over fruit then baked for 10-15 minutes until golden.
