Dedicated bakers can make their own snakes and ladders 'game mat' with multi coloured cake squares and add musk stick or liquorice strap ladders to complete this Women's Day masterpiece.

Ingredients

1 quantity basic butter cake mixture

2 quantities basic butter cream

orange, blue and green food colouring

checkered board game mat

200 gram packet lolly snakes

Method

1.Preheat oven to moderate, 180°C (180°C). Lightly grease and line a 20cm square cake pan with baking paper.

2.Spoon cake mixture into pan and smooth top. Bake for 35-40 minutes, until cooked when tested with a skewer. Cool in pan for 5 minutes before turning onto a wire rack to cool completely. Trim top of cake to create a flat, even surface.

3.Divide butter cream into 3 bowls. Tint each a different colour. Cut cake into 16 even squares. Using a butter knife, spread butter cream over sides and top of each piece.

4.Arrange iced squares on game board. Scatter snakes around cakes to serve.
