1.Preheat oven to 200°C/180°C fan-forced. Grease 12-hole (⅓-cup/ 80ml) muffin pan with butter.
2.Sift flours and sugar into large bowl. Stir in combined butter, yoghurt, eggs and rind. Do not overmix; mixture should be lumpy. Stir in dates.
3.Spoon mixture into pan holes; bake about 20 minutes.
4.Meanwhile, make orange syrup. Stir ingredients in small saucepan over heat until sugar dissolves. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, 2 minutes.
5.Stand muffins in pan 2 minutes; turn, top-side up, onto wire rack. Stand rack over tray. Pierce muffins all over with skewer; pour hot syrup over hot muffins.
