Three year olds love nursery rhymes, and even though the mice are clearly not blind , they're having fun finding the cheese.

Method

1.Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Line muffin pan with the paper cases.
2.Make cake according to directions on packet. Drop 2½ level tablespoons of the mixture into each paper case; bake about 20 minutes. Stand cakes in pan 5 minutes; turn, top-side up, onto wire rack to cool.
3.Divide butter cream into four small bowls. Tint one bowl yellow, tint remaining bowls various shades of pink (light, medium, dark).
4.Spread yellow butter cream over four cakes. Using picture as a guide, spread pink butter cream over remaining seven cakes.
5.On a surface dusted with sifted icing sugar, knead the ready-made icing until smooth; tint yellow. Roll icing until 3mm thick. Cut out 2 x 5cm squares. Cut a few 1.5cm rounds from the squares to give the look of swiss cheese; cut each square into two triangles. Position cheese triangles on yellow cakes.
6.Using picture as a guide, position marshmallow halves for ears and mini M&M’s for eyes. Position Mallow Bake halves for noses. Cut 28 x 1cm pieces from licorice bootlace; use these to make whiskers. Position cakes on prepared board to resemble the number 3; secure with a little butter cream. Cut 7 x 10cm pieces from licorice bootlace to make tails; push into cakes.

You’ll have 1 cup of the cake mixture left over; use it to make more cakes for your guests. We used the mouse traps as a prop in the photo; it’s best not to use them at a children’s party because of safety concerns.
