1.Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan forced. Grease and line a 21 x 10cm (base measurement) loaf pan with baking paper, extending paper at long sides for handles.
2.Place dates in a small heatproof bowl. Pour 1 cup boiling water over dates and let stand, 15 minutes, or until soft. Cool.
3.Using an electric mixer, beat sugar and 150g butter until light and creamy. Add eggs, one by one, beating well after each addition. Add flour, mixed spice, half the cinnamon, oats, carrot and walnuts. Stir until just combined. Add date mixture, fold until just combined. Spoon into prepared pan and smooth surface.
4.Bake, 50-60 minutes, or until a skewer inserted at centre comes out clean. Cool in pan, 5 minutes, before turning out. Combine remaining butter and cinnamon in a small bowl. Slice warm and serve with cinnamon butter.
