The top food trends of 2016

Are they weird or are they wonderful? Photosharing website Pinterest has released its Flavour Report for the Year after analysing billions of food pins. The report identified 10 major trends that are heating up pinners’ boards the world over

1 Turmeric

Turmeric is totally trending, with pins on Pinterest of this vibrant yellow powder up by 99%. In New Zealand, turmeric has been appearing on many menus, partly due to its reported health benefits, but also for the unique flavour it offers – earthy with delicate notes of lemon and mint. The ancient Indian spice is said to be anti-inflammatory, and can help prevent a wide range of cancers. It’s also great in food! We like these Vietnamese pancakes and this coconut curry.

2 Saffron

Saffron is highly prized not just for its monetary value but for the brilliant colour and flavour it adds to food. Try these honey saffron syrup cakes or this chicken with saffron yoghurt.

3 Coconut

We’re not surprised coconut is in the top 5 – the popularity of coconut yoghurt, coconut oil and flavoured coconut milks has not gone unnoticed on these shores. Here’s a round-up of some coconutty goodness on Food to Love.

4 Pineapple

The tropical trend is partly off the back of the rise in popularity of Hawaiian food, says the team at Pinterest. Put the tropical trend to good use with this pineapple fool.

5 Cashew milk

With many people searching for dairy substitutes in the milk department cashew milk has seen a rise in pins by 40%. Pinterest says “cashew milk is the new almond milk, but creamier and less nutty”.

6 Chickpea flour

Another popular substitute is chickpea flour – a gluten-free alternative to flour. Chickpea flour pins are up 30%. Try these gluten-free pizzas to get a taste for it.

7 Basil

But not basil as you know it – we’re talking basil used in wild and wonderful ways such as in ice cream, baking or in candied form. For some more traditional takes on basil, try this carpaccio with basil salsa verde or this spring tart.

8 Coriander

This divisive herb is cropping up in cocktails as well as tacos! Try it in a pesto with noodles or in a delicious twist on hummus.

9 Tapioca

What is tapioca exactly? Tapioca is starch extracted from cassava root and then shaped into flakes, sticks, balls or powdered. Tapioca is most recognisable as squishy pearls and is gluten free. Tapioca makes an excellent pudding, and is often seen in bubble teas.

10 Coffee liqueur
