Pies from all around the country were celebrated on August 1 at this year’s Bakels Supreme Pie Awards.
Ing Lee of Fast & Fresh Bakery in Taupo came out on top, snagging the coveted Supreme Pie Award for his venison, mushroom, bacon and cheese creation.
Lee’s ‘melt in the mouth’ masterpiece beat out more than 5600 entries in what is the award’s 21st year. Lee’s venison pie first caught the judges’ attention when it took out Gold in the Gourmet Meat category.
The decision to crown Lee’s creation was unanimous, with the pastry, texture and flavour all ticking the right boxes.
Interesting entries this year included breakfast pies filled with the likes of spaghetti and potato nuggets through to a goat vindaloo pie and seafood pies starring octopus and anchovies.
